The Catcher in the Rye is often hailed as a classic novel for those on the door step of adulthood. Based on prior knowledge of the book, my primary reason for choosing this novel was the character "Holden Caulfield," an unambitious, cynical teenager who - objectively speaking - has a very limited and fixed understanding/perception of himself, others, and how the world around him works.
However, the style of the author's writing allows the reader to see things from both Holden's point of view and from the stance of an outside observer. In one way or another, I feel that most people can relate to Holden, especially others at his age where we're trying to figure out who we are and where we're going in life. This ability to relate to feelings of stagnation and cynicism are what really drew me to the book. My expectation of this novel is to hopefully be able to see my own life if a different light, to learn something meaningful.
